LOS ANGELES MADE EASY

LA is a great big freeway as the song goes and the sheer size of it can
make it challenging for disabled people. Thankfully, a new web site called
Living Independently in Los Angeles (LILA) will simplify the process. The
site designed by UCLA·s Advanced Policy Institute wants to maximize the
independence of disabled people in LA and shows where to locate everything
from accessible rental apartments to wheelchair repair services, disabled
service agencies and access to LA·s beaches and government
buildings. LILA·s web site also addresses the needs of developmentally
disabled people
as well as those who are visually and hearing impaired. Visitors to the
site can even find the locations of talking ATM machines and blind fencing
teams. The site is interactive and encourages users to share their
accessible discoveries of LA restaurants, buildings, etc. Membership to
the site is free, but users must join. Visit LILA at http://lila.ucla.edu/

This new site was traked down and the information provided by Global Access
Disabled Travel Network http://www.geocities.com/Paris/1502/.

CARE CLUB HOTEL
CASA DA JACKIE

This is a one of a kind destination. Their goal is to offer a carefree
holiday in a wonderful setting with continuous care. Casa da Jackie allows
a person, however care-dependent or disabled they are to enjoy a break with
or without their family and carer. You will enjoy a wonderful, carefree,
special -holiday- tailored to your needs. They offer transport,

Jackie's House, with a hectare of spacious grounds and over 900 square

Algarve, with stunning sea and mountain views. The House has a beautifully
kept garden and swimming pool, a large parking area, and plenty of ground
surrounding it for a country walk.

Built for comfort, Jackie's House was once a family holiday residence,
which has now been adapted for its new life. Downstairs there are five
fully fitted, ample apartments, two one-bedroom and three two-bedroom.
Upstairs there are four "high dependency" luxury rooms, all with their own

There is also a very large common room and kitchen. The common room has a
warm fire glowing in winter. The house is warm and instantly welcoming. The

NEWS FROM ACCESSIBLE SAN DIEGO

The "Beach Cruizer" will be available for use for an hour at a time on a
check-out basis beginning August 1, 2001. Check-outs will be on a first
come-sign up sheet basis at the Mission Beach Lifeguard Station beginning
noon on August 1, 2001. It is very important that each person wishing to
check-out the Beach Cruizers provide a Drivers License or California ID
card of equivalent, provide their own seat cushion to set on while using
the Cruizer, provide their own assistance to transfer into the cruizers and
out when finished. A slide board is available and be timely as each
checkout is for an hour. Remember that the Beach Cruizers are a lot of fun,
but all participants must assure they stay dry and out of the
water. Sincerely, John Gardner Beach Access Manager "When you see someone
who hasn't been able to go across the sand to the water's edge for 10
years, they come back with tears in their eyes," Weseman said. "That's what
it's all about, man.".
