For individuals with hearing and speech disabilities, these changes have meant being able to ·stay connected·. Nationwide access to TRS ( Relay Service) has been significantly improved with the implementation of the new 711 number. This new dialing arrangement will supplement existing systems in most states that require 7 or 10-digit numbers in order to initiate relay calls. TRS users will be able to initiate a call from any telephone, anywhere in the United States by dialing 711. This will eliminate the need to remember and dial a 7 or 10-digit toll free number, or without having to obtain different numbers to access local TRS providers when traveling from state to state. This is excellent news for travelers with speech and hearing impairments! Implementing nationwide 711 access to TRS will significantly improve the ability of people with hearing and speech disabilities to utilize the telephone network, as well as the ability of the general public to communicate with people with hearing and speech disabilities through TRS. The 711 number is now operating in 85% of the United States and the FCC requires that all telecommunications carriers, including wireline, wireless, and payphone providers, implement 711 access to all relay services, in accordance with Commission·s standards on or before October 1, 2001. Pam Gregory, who works in the Disability Rights Office of the FCC, said that they expect a majority of the Relay Centers will keep their existing 800 numbers. This will allow the Relay Centers and its users to dial the previously existing numbers for the different types of services such as voice or text. The FCC·s Disability Rights Office has a very informative web page located at; http://www.fcc.gov/cib/dro **************************************************************************** ********************* TRAVEL WORKSHOPS Access-Able Travel Source is pleased to announce that thanks to Continental airlines we will again be holding workshops for travelers with disabilities each day of this year's Abilities Expos. Sincerely, Carol Randall ********************** *FROM THE STUDENTS* Hi, we're four peruvian students of the Pacifico University in Lima, Peru. We're making a complete study about disabled people, we would like to study the viability of an accessible transportation project for this people, specially for disabled tourists that arrive to Peru. We have designed a little survey to know the tourists' opinion about Peru as a touristic place to visit Without transportation there's no tourism and we as young students and as peruvian people, want to develop this market for tourists and for our country. The accessible tourism is an important need that requires development, so let's work for that purpose. We would be very thankful if you would tak a few minutes to take the survey. To get your copy just download at http://www.access-able.com/survey.html or email carol@access-able.com and you will be forwarded a copy. ****************************************************************************
